Why phone numbers turn into scientific notation in Excel

Excel may interpret a long phone number as a numeric value, display it in scientific notation, and remove leading zeroes.

Phone numbers are identifiers

You do not calculate with a phone number, so it should normally be stored as text rather than a number.

Protect leading zeroes

Convert the destination column to text before importing. Country and area prefixes then remain exactly as supplied.

Check the source value

Formatting cannot restore digits that were already truncated. Verify the original export before cleaning the merged file.

FIX IT IN YOUR BROWSER

Use the file on your device. Nothing gets uploaded.

Load a sample or choose your own files, confirm the result, and download a clean workbook.
