How to merge large Excel files in a browser without crashing

Large workbook jobs fail when memory use grows faster than expected. A safer workflow estimates size, reduces unnecessary sheets and columns, processes sequentially, and validates the output before repeating the job.

Estimate the real workload

File size alone is misleading. Many styled cells, formulas, shared strings, and worksheets can require several times more memory after parsing. Start with a representative batch before loading every file.

Reduce the input surface

Select only required worksheets and columns. Remove blank formatted ranges in a copy of the source if a workbook reports an enormous used range despite containing little visible data.

Process files sequentially

Reading one file at a time limits peak memory. Keep other memory-heavy tabs and desktop applications closed, and avoid starting a second merge while the first export is being built.

Use deterministic rules

Save mappings, date normalization, duplicate keys, and conflict rules as a reusable template. Repeating the same rules is faster and prevents different batches from producing incompatible columns.

Validate in stages

Compare source and output row counts, inspect data types, and open the final workbook before deleting intermediate results. For very large jobs, merge smaller groups first and then consolidate those outputs.

What is the maximum Excel file size?

There is no single safe limit because workbook complexity and device memory matter more than compressed file size. Test a representative batch first.

Does chunking mean the file is uploaded?

No. Chunked or sequential processing can happen entirely in the browser and is used to reduce interface blocking and peak memory.

分阶段验证

比较输入和输出行数,检查数据类型并打开最终文件。任务特别大时,可先合并若干小批次,再汇总这些中间结果。
